My Little Teachers

Sarah, 6, teaching me joy, playfulness, and being in the moment:

Sarah: “I lost my balloon!” (We don’t have any balloons.)
Me, catching on: “Oh, no! Where did it go?”
S: Points to the ceiling.
M: Walk over, jump up, reach, and hand the invisible string back to her.
S: Bringing it over, holds her hand out Tie it on my wrist.

Which I did, and then she continued it on, losing and then rescuing balloons for her little sisters. (Who were actually sleeping at the time, but that’s the great thing about imagination.)

Jade, 3, teaching me kindness and responsibility:

J: Mom, can you get me some cheese?
M: No, hon, I’m chopping vegetables for dinner right now. If you’re too hungry to wait, you can grab a piece of bread.

She sighed and walked away, and then came back a few minutes later.

J: Mom?
M: Yes, sweetie?
J: Um. Sometimes, when you are making dinner and I’m hungry for something I can’t reach, um, I want you to get that thing for me.
M, laughing: Okay honey.

And I got her some cheese.
