Little Things

My sweet mother-in-law (hate using that term, it sounds so, I don’t know, unfriendly or something, but is there an alternative?) gave me a wonderful book for Christmas all about nutrition and herbs and other methods of natural healing.

I love it, every time I pick it up to look up one thing, I get sucked in and want to read more and more. There is so much good information in it, so much I’d like to learn about our bodies and how to promote wellness and overcome sickness using the natural materials of the earth.

Last night my brief reading got me to really reconsider my long-time stance on sleep, which is, the later I can stay up and the less sleep I can get by on, the more I can get done and the better off I’ll be. And I’ve felt “lucky” that I seem to be able to “get by” on not very much.

Somewhere in me I’m sure I already knew this wasn’t good for me, but it’s a really ingrained habit, I tell you! I have completely ignored my body’s signals for sleepiness for so long, I wonder if I even have them anymore.

But the little bit I read about it made me determined to start listening to my body and get a decent amount of sleep. I know I have a new baby which may complicate things, but so far she’s still sleeping so much, I don’t think it will be a problem. I think she only wakes up once between the time I finally go to bed and when I [should] get up.

I also read a little snippet about water, and was reminded (again) of the need to drink at least ten eight-ounce glasses every day. It’s amazing how simple some things are that would probably make a huge difference in my well-being and yet I consistently forget about them (or outright rebel against doing them, as is the case with sleep.)

I do think I eat pretty healthily. I mean, aside from all the sugar, of course. (Someday I plan to tackle that problem. Today is not that day. Tomorrow’s not looking too good either. Likewise, the next five years.) But I eat a lot of whole, fresh foods most days. Even as cheap as I am, I try really hard not to skimp too much when it comes to buying nutritious foods. I figure we can spend the money on fresh fruit and vegetables, whole wheat bread, nuts, healthy-ish yogurt, etc.–or we can give the money to doctors when we’re sick all the time.

Now I’m rambling, and instead of continuing to bore you all to death, I’m actually going to go to bed. I even have a good chance of making it there by midnight.

I’m glad you are attacking your sleep problem. How is you asthma? I didn’t realize you were a sweet freak. Must have inherited that from me ( as I sit her typing with several jelly beans at my elbow). I’m under the impression the girls don’t do candy… right? One of these days I hope to have one of your smoothies. love grannie, have a ball with suz

My asthma hasn’t bothered me since I moved away from VA 10 years ago. Allergies are worse here in Texas than they were in UT, but still no asthma problems. I’m hopelessly addicted to sugar, but not so much candy–I prefer really bad things like cakes, cookies, and pastries. (Although I’ll eat a packet of Rolo’s any day.)
We do have candy occasionally, it’s not forbidden or anything. We just don’t usually buy it, and I don’t like to have it sitting around the house.

Oh, good…I was thinking about bringing my copy (albeit an older version) of that book with me. One less thing to pack.

Mama, my kids come by that sugar habit from their daddy, too…remember the 2 trips with a full duffel bag to the ship just to get his candy on board?!

I hope your little sister got there okay. Can’t wait to see you Saturday!

Hey, I wanted to tell you that I did not get a hold of that book to send with those clothes. But I dropped the clothes off yesterday. It actually ended up being a tote and a smaller box. There was so much stuff. Guess it’s a good thing I accidentally already got rid of the tiny stuff. I will send the book when it comes in. I would love to read a book like the one you are reading as well. I am a firm believer of natural remedies. I bought Kevin Tredaue’s book for my mom. I think its along the same lines. Anyways, have a good one,
    nat
