Some days parenting is just so hard

I feel so discouraged tonight after a few pretty rotten parenting moments today.
It is nothing enormous — no huge, abnormal challenges or anything. I have a two-year-old who needs more attention and a five-year-old who doesn’t love having someone point when she’s angry and should maybe take a minute to cool off. Not big mind-bogglers, I know.
Easy fixes, […]

Do I stop her?

It’s always a dilemma to me, whether to interrupt my kids when they’re doing something so interesting to them, just to say it’s time to get ready for bed. I mean, yes, they need sleep, and sometimes they need subtle guidance to get them there before they melt or crash (and so they’re not a […]

35 Weeks

You’re just dying for another pregnancy update, I know. You’ve missed hearing all about the heartburn and varicose veins and the baby who never. stops. moving — I swear she must have forty-seven legs.
I’m so going to acquiesce your wishes.
I’ve succumbed yet again to the glorious Prilosec OTC for the first. I’ve taken it near the end of […]

She learns fast

Family dinner. Both girls want to say the prayer. First.
Before any agreement is reached, two-year-old Jane says her own super-speedy blessing.
As soon as it’s over, Sariah says, “Erase, Erase” and then offers her own version.
To which Jane replies, “Erase, erase.”

Unappreciated

Oy.
Every time I give the “I don’t feel appreciated” lecture, I feel utterly ridiculous afterward, like I’m still a child, pouting in my room because “Nobody cares about me.” You’re asking why I do it then, and I ask myself the same question.
Reminds me of how parents are always shaking their heads at their […]

Older kids need our patience too

Ignoring dirty dishes piled on counter to sketch out some parenting experiences, and subsequent thoughts, from yesterday before I forget.
I’ve said before that parenting the way I WANT to just seems to come so naturally to Matt, whereas I feel like I have to constantly remind myself to be kind and patient. Here’s how all […]

Soft Teeth?

Is this a real phenomenon, some people just have teeth that are more prone to decay than others? Or is it just something dentists have made up to alleviate parental guilt?

Should I be getting ready?

With both of my first babies, I had pretty intense contractions almost every night for several weeks before baby actually arrived. And so it has begun.
I’m only 33 weeks. Too early, I think, to be running around trying to get all ready for baby — because there’s really not all that much to do, and then I’d be […]

Little Personalities

Would you like to take a glimpse into our lives at the moment? Come on in, relax, pour yourself some hot cocoa. (We do quite a bit with our new Cocomotion machine.) (Seriously, a whole separate appliance. For making hot chocolate. I know.)

Miraculous, if a bit Bizarre
First up, a lovely gem from two-year-old Jade, who […]

Judging Meanness

I’m sad that this has even had to become a goal for me, because it means I’ve slipped dreadfully far into a type of parenting that I never wanted to enter. It’s not frequent, and I’ve apologized and explained that I don’t believe what I just said on the rare occasions that it has happened, […]
