Do you iron?

A friend was talking to me on the phone and asked if she was talking too much and if I had things to talk about (which is a nice twist, as I feel like I’m always the one who can’t shut up). “No,” I told her, “I’m just ironing and it’s nice to have someone to listen to.”

“You iron?” was her incredulous reply.

“Oh no, not usually,” I assured her. “I just bought a bedskirt at a liquidation sale, and it was really wrinkly after getting it out of the package. I don’t anticipate ever doing it again or anything.”

Really and truly, I don’t iron. I’m blessed with a husband who irons his own Sunday shirts, and will even iron my occasional skirt while he’s at it if I ask him. He’s much better at it (of course), but I guess it’s just not a very high priority for me. Sometimes I will spray water on a deep crease, and there’s always the tried and true toss-it-in-the-dryer-for-five-minutes method, but I haven’t done that one in years as my conscience nags me about the waste of electricity and also I really just don’t care enough.

It seems to me, either the wrinkles come out themselves after an hour or so of wear, or, if you do iron, other wrinkles just creep right back in after an hour or so of wear.

Sidenote: I have utilized my iron during recent sewing projects, but this, it seems, is always called “pressing.” And I still avoid it as much as possible.

I typed a reply last night and it was eaten by cyber-space. I think people who iron are weird. I do not do it and my husband wears a suit everyday. But the suit coat covers any wrinkles so who cares. In 5 + years that I’ve been married I pulled it out twice and one was for pressing. Maybe it’s more of a generational thing?

I’m glad I’m not the only one!
